Landslide Near Theng Tunnel Partially Blocks Chyakoong Rivers; No Immediate Downstream Threat

MANGAN, SEPT 6: A major landslide in the Naga Forest area, opposite the Theng Tunnel, triggered concern along the Teesta river belt after a substantial portion of the hillside collapsed during the intervening night of September 5 and 6, partially obstructing the flow of the Chyakoong rivers.

According to the District Administration, Mangan, the landslide occurred above the Chyakoong River, opposite OC Bhir, along a new road cutting of the Naga–Tosa Road. The slide came down near the confluence of the Teesta and Chyakoong rivers, resulting in accumulation of debris and water and temporarily obstructing the flow of the Teesta.

The incident was reported to the District Police and Chungthang Sub-Division Police, following which personnel from the Chungthang Police Station and Theng Check Post began monitoring the situation on the ground.

The latest assessment by the Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority (SSDMA), however, indicates that the situation is presently stable. The flow of the Teesta River remains normal, while water levels at Sankalang and Phidang Observation Posts are also reported to be within normal limits. The water has turned muddy, prompting authorities to maintain continuous surveillance.

No loss of life or injuries have been reported so far. The extent of any damage to property is still being assessed.

The District Administration, Mangan, along with the District Disaster Management Authority, police personnel and field teams, is keeping a close watch on the landslide site and the Teesta river belt. Vulnerable areas in the lower belt have been alerted as a precautionary measure.

Authorities have stressed that there is currently no immediate threat or danger to downstream areas, but residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid venturing close to the Teesta and Chyakoong riverbanks in the affected stretch until the assessment is completed.

SSDMA has also urged the public not to panic or circulate unverified photographs, videos or claims regarding the incident on social media. People have been advised to rely only on official updates from the district administration, DDMA, SSDMA and the State Police.

Officials are continuing to monitor river levels and the slide area, with further updates expected as a detailed assessment of the site progresses.
