Gangtok, August 30, 2026: Sikkim’s shooting fraternity has achieved a significant milestone at the 13th North East Zonal Shooting Championship 2026 held in Assam, with two state shooters earning qualification for the upcoming 69th National Shooting Championship 2026 and another securing a historic bronze medal.
A total of 11 athletes from Sikkim competed in the Air Weapon events at the zonal championship, including eight pistol shooters and three rifle shooters. Representing the state with determination and discipline, the athletes delivered a commendable performance at the regional level.
Anu Chettri secured qualification in the 10m Air Pistol, while Tshering Yangden Bhutia qualified in the 10m Air Rifle for the 69th National Shooting Championship 2026.
Their qualification marks an important achievement for Sikkim’s young shooting talent and reflects the growing competitive strength of the sport in the state.
In another notable achievement, Laxuman Adhikari won the Bronze Medal in the Master Men’s 10m Air Pistol Individual event. The medal is particularly significant for Sikkim as it marks the state’s first-ever medal at the North East Zonal level in shooting.
The historic performance has been welcomed by the Sikkim Rifle Association, affiliated with the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim. The Association congratulated the athletes, coaches, officials, parents and supporters whose dedication and contribution played a role in the achievement.
The Association also expressed appreciation to the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, Government of Sikkim, for its continued support and guidance in promoting and developing shooting sports across the state.
The latest achievements underline the steady progress of shooting in Sikkim and the emergence of a new generation of competitive shooters capable of performing at higher levels.
With a historic zonal medal and two national-level qualifiers, Sikkim’s shooting journey has taken another significant step forward, from the state’s shooting ranges to the national stage.
