GANGTOK, OCT 6: Tashi Namgyal Academy (TNA), Gangtok, student Ms Anushka Chettri has brought laurels to Sikkim by earning the prestigious ‘Very High Commendation’ at the Global Essay Prize 2026, organised by the John Locke Institute, London.

Anushka’s achievement marks an impressive journey from being shortlisted among thousands of entries from across the world to receiving one of the competition’s notable commendations for her exceptional academic writing, analytical ability and critical thinking.

She was shortlisted for the John Locke Essay Competition, an international academic writing competition conducted in association with the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. The competition received more than 100,000 applications from students representing over 140 countries.

Anushka competed in the Philosophy category, responding to Question 3. Her essay developed a carefully reasoned argument, examining underlying assumptions and engaging with contrasting perspectives. Her submission reflected her ability to handle an abstract philosophical question with depth while presenting her ideas through clear, coherent and persuasive writing.

Following her shortlisting, Anushka travelled to London to attend a three-day academic workshop and the John Locke Essay Competition Gala, where shortlisted students from around the world participated in academic discussions and exchanges. She was subsequently awarded the ‘Very High Commendation’, recognising the quality and strength of her essay.

The recognition places Anushka’s achievement on an international academic platform and highlights the growing talent and intellectual potential of students from Sikkim.

Her success has brought immense pride to her parents, teachers and the entire Tashi Namgyal Academy community. She is the daughter of Smt Tshedem Bhutia, Headmistress of Lumsey Secondary School, and Bikram Chettri, Assistant Engineer, Animal Husbandry and Livestock Department, Government of Sikkim.

From the classrooms of Gangtok to an international academic platform in London, Anushka’s achievement stands as an inspiring example of how curiosity, dedication, strong writing skills and the courage to engage with challenging ideas can open doors to global recognition.
