GANGTOK, SEPT 28 : Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang today said entrepreneurship must become a viable avenue for livelihood and economic growth in Sikkim, while urging young people to become “opportunity creators” rather than limiting their aspirations to government employment.
Addressing the first-ever Udyami Bharosa Sammelan 2026 at Manan Kendra, organised by the Commerce and Industries Department, the Chief Minister said the Government’s vision of “One Family, One Entrepreneur” seeks to encourage families and individuals to explore entrepreneurship, self-employment and locally relevant businesses.
He said the State has been building an entrepreneurial ecosystem since 2019 through initiatives including the SEED Cell, Sikkim INSPIRES, Yuva Udyamshilta Vikas Yojana, Sikkim Startup Policy, MSME Policy, Skilled Youth Startup Scheme and Sikkim RISE. He also noted the growing participation of women, with more than 65,000 rural women associated with Self-Help Groups.
Emphasising that entrepreneurship is not limited to large industries, Tamang said small home-based enterprises, local businesses and individual ventures are equally important. He urged entrepreneurs, particularly first-generation entrepreneurs, to learn from both success and failure, maintain financial discipline, understand their markets and focus on quality, customer satisfaction and sustainability.
“Dream big, but start small,” the Chief Minister said, urging consumers to support local enterprises and contribute to the “Vocal for Local” and “Making Sikkim” initiatives.
The Sammelan also showcased the State’s emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem through experience-sharing sessions, startup pitches and the screening of documentaries on entrepreneurship initiatives and Sikkim RISE 2026.
The Chief Minister launched the Catalogue of Temi Tea and the Government Fruit Preservation Factory and released 100 Successful Entrepreneurs. He also felicitated outstanding entrepreneurs and distributed cheques to 80 beneficiaries under the Mukhya Mantri Udyamshilta Yojana.
The event also witnessed the announcement of partnerships and signing of MoUs involving the IIM Calcutta Innovation Park, Amazon and Flipkart Services with the Commerce and Industries Department, aimed at strengthening support and market opportunities for local enterprises.
Minister for Commerce & Industries Tshering Thendup Bhutia said the Government is working to create an enabling environment for entrepreneurship, employment generation and enterprise development, while Secretary Karma D. Youtso highlighted the importance of mentorship, capacity building, institutional support and market linkages.
The Sammelan brought together entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, innovators, government officials and other stakeholders, providing a platform to recognise local enterprise and strengthen Sikkim’s entrepreneurship ecosystem.
