Sikkim Brings Together Investors, Entrepreneurs and Policymakers to Drive North East Growth
GANGTOK, SEPT 26: Sikkim on Saturday emerged as a key platform for advancing entrepreneurship, investment and innovation in the North East, as four major national programmes brought together investors, venture capital funds, family offices, corporates, startups, entrepreneurs and policymakers from across the country.

The two-day convergence, being held on September 26 and 27 at the AIC-SMU Technology Business Incubation Foundation (AIC-SMUTBI) at Majitar in Rangpo, brings together the 2nd Himalayan Investors’ Meet (HIM’26), 2nd North East Entrepreneurs Dialogue (NEED’26), NITI AAYOG Frontier Region Programme and the 4th edition of Entrepreneurs’ Meet 2026 on a common platform.

The programmes are aimed at strengthening the entrepreneurial and investment ecosystem of the North East by creating greater connections between regional enterprises and national networks of capital, technology, markets, industry and institutional support.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, Prof. (Dr.) Tej Chingtham, Chief Executive Officer of AIC-SMUTBI and Advisory Member of the National Startup Advisory Council, DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, said the convergence was designed to bring together different components of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and create opportunities for meaningful engagement.

He said the two-day programme has brought together stakeholders from all eight North-Eastern states along with investors, venture capital funds, family offices, angel investors, corporates, government agencies, policymakers and ecosystem institutions from across the country.

The Himalayan Investors’ Meet (HIM’26) is focused on connecting investors, venture capital funds, family offices and corporates with high-potential startups and emerging investment opportunities across the Himalayan and North Eastern ecosystem.

The North East Entrepreneurs Dialogue (NEED’26) provides a regional platform for entrepreneurs, Startup Nodal Agencies, government representatives and ecosystem stakeholders from the eight North-Eastern states to discuss ways to strengthen entrepreneurship and create opportunities for enterprises from the region to expand and scale.

The NITI AAYOG Frontier Region Programme is facilitating consultations on development priorities, opportunities and challenges in frontier regions of the North East, bringing together relevant government and institutional stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the 4th Entrepreneurs’ Meet 2026, the flagship annual platform of AIC-SMUTBI, is providing entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, corporates and ecosystem partners with opportunities to connect, showcase innovations and explore partnerships.

Prof. Chingtham said the simultaneous hosting of the four programmes was significant as it brought together areas that are often addressed separately, including investment, entrepreneurship, policy, industry and regional development.

The convergence is also providing startups and entrepreneurs from the North East with an opportunity to interact directly with investors and industry representatives, understand market requirements, explore partnerships and develop networks beyond the region.

Representatives from organisations and institutions including Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), IBM, Zoho and Bosch are participating in the programmes, alongside venture capital investors, family offices, angel investors and other corporate and investment ecosystem stakeholders.

The programmes are showcasing the potential of the North East across a range of sectors, including technology, tourism, agriculture and food processing, healthcare, handicrafts and handlooms, climate and sustainability, logistics, manufacturing, digital services and emerging technologies.

According to Prof. Chingtham, the objective extends beyond creating new startups and focuses on building an ecosystem in which enterprises from the region can access capital, establish market linkages, attract industry partnerships and scale their operations.

He said a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem could enable enterprises to generate employment and create greater economic value within the North East while allowing regional businesses to connect with wider national and international markets.

AIC-SMUTBI, supported by the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), NITI AAYOG, Government of India, has been working towards strengthening the startup and innovation ecosystem in the North East. The centre connects entrepreneurs from the region with investors, mentors, corporates, institutions and government stakeholders while providing incubation, acceleration, mentorship, investment and market access support.

The participation of stakeholders from all eight North-Eastern states is also expected to encourage greater collaboration across state boundaries and promote a more integrated regional entrepreneurial ecosystem.

The convergence seeks to strengthen the connection between the North East's emerging entrepreneurial potential and the capital, technology, markets and institutional networks available at the national level.

The organisers said sustained growth in the region would require closer cooperation among government, industry, investors, academia and entrepreneurs, with the four programmes providing a common platform for such engagement.

The initiatives also form part of the broader effort to position the North East as an active contributor to innovation, entrepreneurship, investment, employment generation and economic growth in the country.
