Landslide Situation Remains Serious in Rimbi Amid Continuous Rainfall
GYALSHING, 25 SEPT: The situation in Rimbi village under Yuksom Sub-Division of Gyalshing district remains serious following recurring landslides triggered by continuous rainfall. The area first witnessed landslide activity in the second week of last month, with the situation since affecting residents and disrupting connectivity to Yuksom, the former capital of Sikkim.

A joint team led by Gyalshing District Collector Tenzing Denzongpa visited the affected area to assess damage to land, houses and other properties, as well as the risks to nearby settlements. Further relief, rehabilitation and mitigation measures are expected to be taken based on the assessment.

Speaking to the media, DC Tenzing Denzongpa said continuous rainfall had pushed mud and debris towards the village, damaging houses and disrupting electricity supply. He said the administration was assessing the extent of the damage.

The district administration had already evacuated residents from the vulnerable area and shifted them to a relief camp as a precautionary measure. No loss of life or livestock has been reported so far.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister expressed deep concern over the situation in Rimbi following the severe landslides and said that the safety and well-being of the people remain the government's foremost priority.

Taking his official social media page Facebook, the Chief Minister said the government stands firmly with the people of Rimbi during the difficult situation. Necessary directions have been issued to the concerned authorities to remain on high alert, closely monitor the situation and take all possible measures to ensure the safety and security of the public.

The Chief Minister also acknowledged the distress and uncertainty faced by residents, particularly as the difficulties have persisted since the landslide activity began.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant during the continuing torrential rainfall, follow advisories issued by the authorities and extend support to one another.

The government said it is closely monitoring the situation and will continue to take necessary measures to protect people in the affected area.
