GANGTOK, SEPT 23: Roads and Bridges Minister N.B. Dahal has undertaken an intensive assessment of damaged road infrastructure across Gyalshing and Soreng districts over the past three days, personally reviewing critical stretches, vulnerable road sections, bridges and protection structures amid continuing concerns over connectivity.
The field assessment has focused on identifying damage, assessing the condition of key road and bridge infrastructure and determining immediate interventions required to restore and strengthen connectivity in affected areas.
During his visit to Soreng, the Minister reviewed the condition of critical infrastructure along the Nayabazar–Legship State Highway, including the tunnel and road protection wall. Officials were directed to coordinate with NHPC Rangit Stage IV and take immediate action on identified requirements.
The condition and maintenance requirements of the Reshi Tunnel were also examined, with emphasis on structural safety, regular maintenance and ensuring uninterrupted movement through the important corridor.
A detailed assessment was also made of the Chumbotay Bridge and other road and bridge infrastructure requiring urgent attention. Officials briefed the Minister on technical concerns, field-level damage and maintenance requirements affecting the safe movement of commuters and vehicles.
The under-construction Nayabazar–Zoom road was another key focus during the assessment, with District Magistrate Soreng Dhiraj Subedi apprising the Minister of issues requiring intervention and follow-up.
The field inspections form part of the Minister’s continuing assessment of road damage across Gyalshing and Soreng, with emphasis on ground verification rather than relying solely on departmental reports. The exercise is aimed at identifying vulnerable stretches, prioritising repair and protection works, and ensuring that critical connectivity routes remain functional.
At a review meeting held at the District Magistrate’s office in Soreng, Minister Dahal stressed the need for regular monitoring and timely maintenance of roads, bridges, tunnels and protection structures, particularly along strategically important connectivity routes.
He directed the concerned departments and agencies to maintain close coordination and ensure that identified problems are addressed in a time-bound manner.
The assessment comes as road infrastructure in several parts of the State continues to require close monitoring, particularly at locations vulnerable to damage and disruption. The Minister’s three-day field exercise is expected to help the department prioritise repair and restoration requirements based on the actual condition of infrastructure on the ground.
