Gangtok, September 2: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Sikkim has raised concerns over the continued hardships faced by residents of Lower Kambal Ward under Tumin-Lingi Constituency, alleging that several families affected by the devastating 2023 Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) are still awaiting meaningful assistance and rehabilitation.
A high-level BJP delegation led by State President D.R. Thapa visited the affected area following repeated grievances from local residents over the alleged negligence of the administration and the State Government in addressing their concerns.
During the visit, the delegation found, according to the party, that several families had suffered extensive damage to their houses, agricultural land and other properties in the GLOF. The affected residents reportedly told the delegation that despite repeated appeals to the concerned authorities, their grievances remain unresolved and adequate rehabilitation and support have not reached them.
The BJP said the situation raises serious questions over the implementation of post-disaster relief, rehabilitation and restoration measures in the affected area. The party expressed concern that families continue to struggle with damaged houses and land years after the disaster without what it described as a satisfactory resolution to their concerns.
“Relief and rehabilitation are not merely administrative formalities but a matter of human dignity, justice and the responsibility of the government towards its citizens,” the BJP said.
The party also acknowledged the substantial assistance and support extended by the Government of India for disaster management and recovery in Sikkim. However, it stressed that the benefits of such assistance must reach the genuinely affected people in a transparent, timely and accountable manner.
In view of the situation, BJP Sikkim said it would take up the grievances of the affected families at the highest appropriate level and seek necessary intervention to ensure that their concerns are properly examined.
The party further said it would continue to pursue the matter until the genuine concerns of Lower Kambal residents relating to rehabilitation, damaged properties and livelihood are addressed.
The allegations regarding the administration and State Government are those made by BJP Sikkim in its press release. No response from the government or local administration was included in the statement.
